Mental health red flags in young people

During this last #worldmentalhealthday it was all about raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

The stigma surrounding mental health is still very alive up to this day, even for the younger generations.

In 2021, Deloitte conducted a survey on mental health issues among the Millennial and Gen Z generations. The results of the survey revealed that mental health is a significant concern for these age groups, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated these issues.

The survey found that 51% of Millennials and 61% of Gen Z reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression during the pandemic. Additionally, 25% of Millennials and 31% of Gen Z reported feeling lonely frequently or all the time.

Social media was identified as a significant contributor to these mental health challenges, with 56% of Millennials and 62% of Gen Z reporting that social media has a negative impact on their mental health. The constant comparison to others and the pressure to present a curated version of oneself can lead to feelings of inadequacy and stress.

The survey also found that there is still a significant stigma surrounding mental health, with only 38% of Millennials and 35% of Gen Z feeling comfortable discussing their mental health with their employer. This is concerning as the workplace can often be a significant source of stress for younger generations.

However, the survey also revealed that there is a growing awareness and willingness to address mental health issues. 80% of Millennials and 82% of Gen Z believe that companies should prioritize their employees' mental health and well-being. This highlights the importance of employers taking steps to support their employees' mental health, such as offering mental health resources and promoting a healthy work-life balance.

To combat these mental health challenges, it's crucial to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed. This can include talking to a therapist, practicing self-care, and finding healthy ways to cope with stress. It's also important to cultivate a supportive community and engage in open, honest conversations about mental health.

In conclusion, the Deloitte survey highlights the significant mental health challenges faced by the Millennial and Gen Z generations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's essential to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed, while also promoting a culture that values and supports mental health and well-being. By working together, we can create a future where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.
